The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cross River State Command, has stepped up preparations for the 2026 Ember Months, with measures aimed at improving road safety, managing traffic and reducing road traffic crashes across the state.
The Sector Commander, Mr Innocent Etuk, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Calabar.
Etuk said the Command had introduced strategic measures to tackle the expected rise in vehicular movement, traffic congestion, road user indiscipline and other challenges typically associated with the Ember Months.
According to him, special intervention patrols have been strengthened along major highways, traffic corridors, identified black spots and other locations prone to crashes and congestion.
He added that patrol teams had been deployed to strategic areas to monitor road users, enforce traffic regulations and respond quickly to emergencies.
The Sector Commander said the operation would pay particular attention to offences such as dangerous driving, overloading, excessive speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, phone use while driving, failure to use seatbelts, tyre-related violations, mechanically defective vehicles and number plate offences.
Etuk also announced plans for extensive public enlightenment campaigns across the state. The campaigns will be carried out through radio and television programmes, social media, motor parks, town hall meetings, road shows and other platforms.
He explained that the sensitisation efforts would educate motorists, commercial drivers, passengers and other road users on safe driving practices while encouraging patience, discipline and caution throughout the period.
The FRSC boss further disclosed that personnel would be stationed at major intersections, entry and exit points, busy traffic corridors and motor parks to maintain smooth traffic flow.
He directed officers to combine effective traffic management with firm but courteous enforcement in order to reduce delays and prevent avoidable gridlock.
Etuk urged FRSC personnel to remain professional, disciplined and responsive throughout the operation, stressing that the Ember Months campaign goes beyond enforcement.
He described the exercise as a collective effort to save lives, prevent crashes and facilitate the safe movement of people and goods across Cross River State.
The Sector Commander advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead, avoid night travel where possible and get adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips.
He also urged members of the public to report dangerous driving and other unsafe road practices to the FRSC through its toll-free emergency line, 122.
