The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has trained 32 lecturers and postgraduate students from universities across the South-East in modern geophysical exploration techniques as part of efforts to strengthen research and technical capacity in Nigeria’s petroleum and energy sector.

The participants, drawn from federal, state and private universities across the region, took part in a capacity development workshop organised by the PTDF Professorial Chair in Petroleum Geology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The workshop, themed “High Resolution Geophysical Exploration Techniques: Data Acquisition, Processing and Interpretation,” focused on equipping participants with modern skills for understanding subsurface structures and addressing practical challenges in petroleum exploration and development.

Speaking at the event, PTDF Executive Secretary, Prof. Shu’aibu Shehu Aliyu, said the increasing application of advanced geophysical technologies in petroleum and energy exploration had made continuous capacity development essential.

Aliyu, who was represented by the agency’s Director/Manager of Research and Development, Favour Adaure-Prince, said the PTDF remained committed to supporting Nigerian universities in developing the knowledge and technical expertise required to advance the country’s energy industry.

He urged the lecturers and postgraduate students to maximise the opportunity by acquiring new knowledge, exchanging ideas and building professional networks that would contribute to the development of Nigeria’s petroleum and energy sector.

“The PTDF remains committed to supporting universities to develop the knowledge and skills required to advance Nigeria’s energy industry,” Aliyu said.

Also speaking, the Chair Professor at the event, Prof. Olusola Ojo, disclosed that the 32 participants were selected from universities across the South-East region.

Ojo urged the participants to translate the knowledge and technical skills acquired during the workshop into improved teaching, research and practical solutions to challenges confronting Nigeria’s petroleum and energy industry.

The training is expected to contribute to strengthening the region’s academic and technical capacity while promoting the application of modern geophysical technologies in energy-related research and exploration.
