Orji Uzor Kalu, the Senator representing Abia North at the National Assembly, has affirmed that his ongoing philanthropic efforts, involving food items and cash distribution, are not driven by politics but by a longstanding commitment to his people, pledging to sustain this tradition.

Addressing the community in his Igbere hometown within the Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Senator Kalu stated that this annual Yuletide gesture dates back to 1986, predating his entry into Nigerian politics, The Nigerian Tribune reports.

He insisted that its continuous implementation over the years underscores its non-political nature.

Kalu reiterated his commitment to providing food and cash during the Igbere cultural festival, extending the gesture to cover the festive season, benefiting 13 villages with approximately 30,000 inhabitants, ensuring that no one faces hunger.

During the event, he urged the community to foster unity and clarified, “I urge you all to be your brother’s keeper and be aware that these items are not for the traditional rulers as I have a separate package for them.”

As the Senate Committee Chairman on Privatization, Kalu highlighted that this initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s food security program and aims to alleviate economic hardships faced by the people.

In response, Chimuanya Onwubiko, a youth leader in the area, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, praising Senator Kalu’s consistent support over three decades.

Onwubiko hailed Kalu’s efforts as a testament to genuine care beyond political motives, acknowledging his contributions to infrastructure and empowerment in the community since his governorship days.

“We won’t take these generous gestures for granted as words cannot describe how happy we are over his legacy.

“It is a magnanimous show of love beyond politics which shows that he truly loves us and we also love him.

“He has brought infrastructure and empowerment to the community right from his governorship days and has continued to add value to our lives,” he said.
