A middle aged man has been killed, while several passengers sustained serious injuries in a road crash involving a tipper truck and a Toyota Sienna bus along Ossah Road in Umuahia, Abia State.
The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. on Monday when the white tipper truck, reportedly loaded with wet sand, collided with the Sienna bus at a sharp bend along the road.
The tipper truck was said to have been returning from a sand mining site while conveying the material to a construction site when the collision occurred.
The impact reportedly threw the truck’s conductor out of the vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries at the scene.
Several other passengers involved in the crash sustained injuries and were evacuated to a hospital by personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Command, for medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the FRSC Sector Commander in Abia State, Ngozi Ezeoma, said officers from the command were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving information about the crash.
Ezeoma said investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing.
She urged motorists and other road users across the state to observe traffic regulations and prioritise safety to prevent avoidable road crashes.
