Catholic priest and founder of Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria (AMEN), Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has said Nigerian youths should not be blamed for supporting the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi.

Mbaka made the remarks in a video recorded during one of his church programmes, where he attributed the growing support for Obi among some young Nigerians to their search for leadership they believe can address the challenges confronting the country.

According to the cleric, many youths are looking for someone they believe can improve their living conditions and provide solutions to the difficulties they face.

Mbaka also described Nigeria’s current challenges as “spiritual”, arguing that the country is endowed with significant human and natural resources but has struggled to translate those resources into improved living conditions for many citizens.

He described Nigerian youths as industrious and said their potential remained largely underutilised.

The priest also cited Nigeria’s mineral resources, including gold and coal, while questioning why the country continues to experience poverty and inadequate electricity despite its natural endowments.

Mbaka specifically referenced Enugu’s coal deposits, arguing that the presence of the resource had not translated into sufficient economic benefits for residents.

He further criticised successive governments over policies and actions which he said had negatively affected ordinary Nigerians, including issues surrounding the demolition of shops and land disputes.

On insecurity, Mbaka linked challenges such as kidnapping to political factors, without providing detailed evidence for the claim.

His comments come amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections and growing attention on Peter Obi’s political support base. Obi is the presidential candidate of the NDC for the 2027 election.
