Real Madrid reportedly want the six Premier League clubs that initially joined the European Super League project to contribute towards the costs of launching the now-abandoned competition, with the total bill said to be as high as €80 million.

Real Madrid are seeking to recover the initial costs associated with the failed European Super League project, with the six Premier League clubs that signed up to the proposal expected to share the financial burden, according to reports.

The clubs initially involved were Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. All six subsequently withdrew from the controversial breakaway competition following widespread backlash from supporters and other stakeholders in football.
Despite their withdrawal, sources reportedly believe the English clubs should still contribute towards the expenses incurred in establishing the project.

The costs are estimated to have reached as much as €80 million, although the precise amount each club could be expected to pay, and the terms of any potential repayment, remain unclear.

The European Super League was announced in April 2021 as a proposed competition featuring some of Europe’s biggest clubs. However, the original plan quickly collapsed after fierce opposition from fans, governing bodies and political leaders.

Real Madrid were among the leading supporters of the initiative, alongside Barcelona and Juventus, as the project sought to reshape the European football landscape.

The reported demand could reopen questions about the financial responsibilities of clubs that committed to the original proposal before withdrawing from the project.
