The Security Situation Room has urged Nigerian security agencies to stop the practice of detaining suspects without proper clothing or bringing them out of detention cells half naked, describing the practice as a violation of human dignity and constitutional rights.

The Convener of the Security Situation Room, Douglas Ogbankwa, Esq., made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

According to the statement, the organisation expressed concern over reports of security personnel stripping suspects partially naked during detention and when bringing them out of their cells.

The statement maintained that such treatment contradicts the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which protects the fundamental rights and dignity of every person.

Ogbankwa stressed that arrest does not strip citizens of their fundamental rights, noting that suspects are entitled to humane treatment regardless of the allegations against them.

He further stated that suspects should be properly clothed and allowed to wear their shoes or slippers when being brought out of detention cells or presented before a court of law.

The Security Situation Room also called on investigating officers and their team leaders to familiarise themselves with the provisions of the Anti Torture Act, 2017, which addresses acts of torture and provides for accountability under the law.

The statement further referenced the Administration of Criminal Justice laws at both federal and state levels, noting that officers may face personal legal consequences where the law permits, particularly in cases involving alleged misconduct or violations of citizens’ rights.

The organisation’s position underscores the importance of upholding human dignity, protecting the fundamental rights of suspects and ensuring that law enforcement agencies conduct investigations in accordance with established legal procedures.
