Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has intensified efforts to improve public transportation and strengthen security across the state through the procurement of new buses, patrol vehicles and modern surveillance equipment.

The interventions, reportedly carried out under his administration’s People’s Charter of Needs agenda, are aimed at reducing transportation costs, improving mobility and enhancing the operational capacity of security agencies.

In the transport sector, the state government procured and commissioned 20 brand-new Toyota Hiace buses for the state-owned Ebonyi Transport Corporation (EBOTRANS). The air-conditioned vehicles are expected to improve commuters’ comfort and strengthen public transportation services.

The government also refurbished nine Sienna buses to complement the existing fleet and improve inter-town transportation.

Additionally, Governor Nwifuru introduced free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus services for civil servants and students, providing transportation to and from their workplaces and schools as part of measures to cushion the impact of rising transportation costs.

The administration has also expanded EBOTRANS operations beyond Abakaliki, introducing new routes connecting Ebonyi State to Lagos, as well as Izzi and Ezzamgbo communities, to facilitate movement for traders, farmers, students and other residents.

Other infrastructure interventions include the construction of modern bus shelters at strategic locations and the installation of traffic lights to improve traffic management and road safety within Abakaliki, the state capital.

On security, the governor’s administration reportedly procured 31 Toyota Hilux patrol vans, which were distributed to security formations operating in the state during the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations.

The benefiting agencies include the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Nigerian Correctional Service.

The government also acquired security drones and other modern surveillance equipment to strengthen intelligence gathering, monitor criminal activities and improve security operations, particularly in border communities and hard to reach areas.

The interventions reflect the administration’s stated commitment to addressing transportation challenges while strengthening security as essential pillars of socioeconomic development.

With investments in public transportation, road infrastructure and security logistics, the Nwifuru administration says it is working towards improving the quality of life and creating a safer environment for residents of Ebonyi State.
