Renowned Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, dropped a bombshell on Wednesday, revealing a clandestine conspiracy aimed at annulling the 2023 presidential election, drawing chilling parallels to the notorious 1993 cancellation by former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida.
Soyinka, speaking on Channels Television, declared, “History was about to repeat itself; some people were determined to take us back to those days.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had initially declared Bola Tinubu as President, with the former Lagos State governor securing victory with 8,794,726 votes.
However, Soyinka alleged, “There was a conspiracy from the very beginning before the election to make sure the elections did not take place or that even if the voting did take place, that everything be reverted to what happened under Babangida.”
He emphasized that it evolved beyond a contest between individuals, transforming into a battle between the “interim political party” and democracy.
In response to the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Datti Baba-Ahmed’s controversial comment, Soyinka condemned it as “disgraceful and menacing,” labeling it as the ultimate signal.
Despite the Supreme Court’s dismissal of opposition appeals in October 2023, which challenged Tinubu’s victory, Soyinka’s revelation adds a spine-chilling dimension to the political saga, raising questions about the integrity of the electoral process.
