Not less that thirty-eight suspected protesters, who protested against the Supreme Court’s verdict that affirmed Governor Abdullahi Sule as the rightful winner of the March 18, 2023, Nasarawa State governorship election, have found themselves remanded at the Lafia Correctional Center.
The charges against them stem from their alleged involvement in causing public disturbance.
The suspects were presented before the Chief Magistrate Court three in Lafia by the state Commissioner of Police, Umaru Shehu Nadada.
The arrest happened following the Supreme Court judgment, during which security operatives arrested aggrieved protesters, primarily consisting of women.
The Commissioner of Police issued orders for the protesters to face charges for public disturbance, leading to their appearance in court.
According to Vanguard, the prosecuting counsel, Danjuma Allu, mentioned the case for hearing before Chief Magistrate Mohammed Abdullahi Lanze, who reserved his ruling for Monday, January 22, 2024.
Despite the defense counsel, Iliya Ashokpa, pleading for bail on behalf of the defendants, it was not granted.
The thirty-eight suspected protesters, including a man allegedly arrested while retrieving his vehicle from a mechanic, were subsequently taken to the Nigeria Correctional Center in Lafia as they await trial.
The remanded individuals consist of approximately five men and thirty-three women.
The Supreme Court’s judgment on Friday solidified Governor Abdullahi Sule’s victory, triggering protests from aggrieved women and men in Nasarawa State.
