On Thursday, the Police announced that they had detained the son and adopted daughter of John Okafor, also referred to as Mr. Ibu, for their suspected involvement in embezzling N55 million in donations intended to support the actor’s medical expenses.
In Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos State, the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department disclosed that it was holding Onyeabuchi Okafor and Jasmine Okekeagwu.
Due to his poor health, Mr. Ibu had requested assistance on social media last year, and doctors had told him that his legs would need to be amputated.
The Bukola Saraki Foundation, which stated in a statement that it “has fully covered the medical expenses of the renowned Nollywood actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu,” was among the well-wishers who would heed his pleas and donate money to the family.
The actor’s wife Stella Okafor received a petition from Diamond Waves Law claiming that Mr. Ibu’s two sons had conspired with his adopted daughter Jasmine to defraud their father. FCID Public Relations Officer Mayegun Amina provided details about the reason behind the arrest.
Amina also mentioned that the thieves had tampered with the comic’s phone in order to obtain the money.
The Force asserted, however, that it had also found the N55 million that the kids had allegedly stolen.
She added, “They then erased the banking applications that had previously been installed on Mr. Ibu’s phone and reinstalled Mr. Ibu’s mobile banking applications on Onyeabuchi Daniel Oka’s phone in order to perfect their preconceived fraudulent plans, thereby taking direct and full charge of Mr. Ibu’s banking activities to the funds being donated by members of the public in support of his medicals.”
PRO AmIna also stated that the duo have been charged to court.
