President Bola Tinubu has issued directives to top security officials, including the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Director General of the Department of State Service Yusuf Bichi, to collaborate with governors in tackling the issue of food hoarding.
The move comes amidst Nigeria’s battle against soaring food prices exacerbated by factors such as the removal of fuel subsidies and insecurity.
Addressing reporters after a meeting between President Tinubu and state governors, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris revealed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring food availability for Nigerians.
Idris stated, “The National Security Adviser, Inspector General of Police, and Director General of the State Services have been directed to coordinate with state governors to address the issue of those hoarding commodities.”
He emphasized the urgency of releasing stored food items to stabilize prices and alleviate the burden on citizens. Tinubu had previously ordered the release of grains to mitigate rising costs, with the federal government considering food imports.
However, Idris clarified that importation won’t be pursued further, emphasizing Nigeria’s potential to achieve food self-sufficiency and even become a net exporter.
The minister reassured Nigerians that the current challenges are temporary and pledged the government’s commitment to fostering food production and ensuring a swift resolution to the crisis.
