Amid a looming nationwide strike, the Senate has, as a matter of urgent need, pleaded with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to shelve its proposed strike.
On Monday’s plenary, the Senate, while pleading with the NLC to reconsider its stance, said the planned action can paralyze the economy of the country, warning that the effect of the strike could be devastating on ‘everyday Nigerians.’
MUK TV had reported how the NLC had given the federal government a one-week ultimatum to reverse what it calls “all anti-people policies”, especially the hike in fuel prices, or face a nationwide strike, beginning on Wednesday, August 2.
The resolution of the Senate followed a motion titled “Urgent need to avert an impending nationwide strike being called by the Nigeria Labour Congress over the removal of fuel subsidy,” sponsored by Senator Sulaiman Kawu (NNPP-Kano South).
Kawu, in his lead debate, insisted that the strike would have a devastating effect on the nation’s economy if allowed to hold.
Other Senators like Isah Jibrin, Seriake Dickson, and Solomon Adeola supported the motion.
The Senate also called on the NLC to give the federal government more time and allow the implementation of the palliative measures being planned by the government to ameliorate the suffering of the people.
