Employees across federal civil service, ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) are experiencing growing unrest as the government fails to disburse January salaries, further exacerbated by an outstanding backlog of N35,000 in wage awards.

The non-payment issue is attributed to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation’s (OAGF) inability to finalize the 2024 Appropriation on the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS) platform, hindering the release of the personnel warrant for January 2024 salary payments.

Bomoi Muhammed Ibraheem, General Secretary of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), confirmed to Vanguard that union members, including core and non-core civil servants, have not received their salaries.

Expressing frustration, a federal secretariat staff member in Abuja lamented the situation, citing the economic challenges in Nigeria and the delayed N35,000 wage award, initially promised after the removal of the petrol subsidy and paid only in September.

In response to the unrest among its staff, the National Mathematical Centre in Abuja issued an internal memo dated January 31, 2024, titled “Delay in the payment of January 2024 salary,” acknowledging the delay and informing employees about the situation.
