An afternoon downpour wreaked havoc on Ochanja Market Road, recently completed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, in a startling turn of events barely one week after its construction.
Located in the Woliwo community of Onitsha South local government area in Anambra State, Ochanja Market Road was left in ruins as the rain washed away the freshly laid asphalt, leaving behind a scene of destruction and disappointment.
A viral video circulating on Monday night captured the aftermath, revealing the extent of the damage with scattered debris and waterlogged sections along the road.
Amidst growing concerns from residents, questions arise about the quality and durability of projects undertaken by Soludo’s administration, despite hefty investments from taxpayers.
The swift deterioration of the newly constructed road raises doubts about the government’s infrastructure initiatives and their long-term sustainability.
Expressing dismay, one post accompanying the video highlighted the alarming contrast between the colossal sums spent on construction and the road’s rapid disintegration under just 20 minutes of rainfall, as reported by Sahara Reporters.
“Prof Chukwuma Soludo’s one week old Road washed away in a spit of a second.
“The ‘Dubai-Taiwan’ Ochanja market road in Onitsha constructed with billions of Anambra taxpayers’ money has just been washed away by just one episode of 20 minutes rainfall on Monday 25th of March 2024
“The rainfall exposed the nature of poor quality jobs executed by the government.”
“Just a few weeks ago, at the same Ochanja Market, a storey building under construction by the same government collapsed, killing an unknown number of people.
“By the time the rainfall is fully established in June, more poorly executed construction by the Anambra State Government could be laid bare for the blind to see,” the post further lamented.
The incident not only underscores the urgent need for accountability in public projects but also casts doubt on the safety and reliability of infrastructure across the state.
As the rainy season progresses, the true extent of substandard construction may come to light, posing further risks to residents and commuters.
Despite mounting public outcry, the state government has remained silent on the matter, leaving citizens seeking answers and assurances about the future of infrastructure under Soludo’s leadership.
