The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has arrested three suspects over the alleged vandalism of government property and structures on government-owned land in Onitsha South Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended by NSCDC operatives working in collaboration with the Agunachemba Security Outfit while allegedly vandalising government property at the site.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Head of Media and Tactical Operations of the NSCDC Anambra State Command, SC Okadigbo Edwin, as part of the command’s review of its operational activities for the week.
The suspects were identified as Oseloka Anyaorah of Onitsha Umuasi, who allegedly claimed to be the Chairman of Ogbo Family, alongside John Nwobodo and Ifeanyi Nwancho, who reportedly claimed to be employees of Anyaorah.
Items recovered from the scene included a government signpost, zinc sheets, nails and other building materials. The NSCDC said the recovered materials have been taken into its custody.
According to the Corps, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects allegedly conspired to damage and remove portions of government infrastructure belonging to Onitsha South.
Reacting to the incident, the Anambra State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Maku Olatunde, condemned the alleged vandalism, describing the destruction of public property as economic sabotage against the government and people of the state.
Maku reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, directing that the suspects be properly profiled and charged to court after investigations are concluded.
He also called on traditional rulers, town union leaders and residents across Anambra State to provide timely and credible information to security agencies to help prevent the vandalism of government facilities and other public infrastructure.
The NSCDC said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
