Residents of Ohafia and surrounding communities in Abia State have been put on notice as the 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army rolls out a major live-fire exercise scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
The high-intensity drill, part of activities marking the 82 Division Corporals and Below Competition 2026, will feature both day and night shooting exercises by participating military formations at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Shooting Range in Ohafia from 12:00 noon to 11:00 pm.
The announcement was made in a statement by Captain Muyiwa Ayara on behalf of the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade, Nigerian Army.
According to the Army, the exercise is a routine but critical operation designed to sharpen soldiers’ combat readiness, improve marksmanship, and boost overall operational efficiency.
However, with gunfire expected to echo across the area for hours, the military has urged residents not to raise alarm.
“Members of the public are therefore advised not to panic at the sound of gunshots during the period, as all activities will be conducted in a controlled and secure environment.
“For the safety of lives and property, the general public is strongly advised to: Stay away from the shooting range area throughout the duration of the exercise. Avoid unauthorised movement within and around the designated training zone.
“Adhere strictly to all instructions and warnings issued by military personnel and relevant authorities.
The Nigerian Army assures the public of its commitment to the safety and security of all citizens and solicits the understanding and cooperation of the community. Please disseminate.”
Residents have also been warned to steer clear of the designated training zone and strictly follow all directives from security personnel to avoid any risk.
A shooting exercise is a planned military training designed to prepare troops for real-life combat situations involving gunfire, ensuring they remain battle-ready at all times.
