Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has declared that he only accepted the nation’s top electoral job after receiving what he described as a clear conviction from God.
Speaking in Abuja during an appreciation service organised by the Nigerian Baptist Convention, the INEC boss said faith was the deciding factor in his acceptance of the high-stakes role.
“I had conviction from God before accepting INEC appointment,” he said.
Amupitan stressed that without that spiritual assurance, he would not have taken on the responsibility of overseeing Nigeria’s complex electoral system, especially with the crucial 2027 general elections on the horizon.
According to him, that divine conviction has remained his anchor amid the enormous pressure that comes with managing elections in Africa’s most populous nation.
He also called on Nigerians to support the commission with prayers, insisting that divine guidance will be key to navigating future challenges and delivering credible polls.
The INEC chairman, who assumed office in October 2025, reaffirmed his commitment to conducting transparent and credible elections, expressing confidence that improved outcomes are achievable with faith and collective backing.
