Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that he would serve only one term of four years if elected President of Nigeria, insisting that nothing would make him remain in office beyond that period.
Obi made the declaration in a clip from an interview scheduled to air on News Central TV on Thursday, where he explained that his decision was driven by the need for stability in the country.
“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day, with a gun to my head, longer than four years,” he said in the circulating video.
The former governor of Anambra State also took a swipe at the current administration’s economic policies, criticising the rising cost of living and increasing borrowing profile of the country.
According to Obi, Nigeria is currently facing one of its toughest economic periods in recent history.
Peter Obi was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, where he finished third behind Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Since the election, Obi has remained one of the leading opposition voices in the country, frequently criticising the economic reforms and policies of the Tinubu administration.
