The Federal Government has announced that Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, will be public holidays nationwide in observance of the Eid-el-Kabir festival, granting Muslims and other Nigerians a two-day break to celebrate the annual religious occasion.

The declaration follows the confirmation of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir dates, with the festival set to begin on Wednesday, May 27, after the Day of Arafat on Tuesday, May 26. The holidays apply to all public servants and institutions, as government offices, schools, and many private sector organisations are expected to close for the duration of the celebration.

By setting May 27 and 28 as work-free days, the government aims to provide Muslims across the country sufficient time to observe the religious rites associated with Eid-el-Kabir, including congregational prayers, family gatherings, and the traditional sacrifice. The holiday period is also expected to boost travel and commercial activities as many Nigerians journey to their hometowns and markets prepare for increased demand linked to the festivities.

Authorities have urged citizens to use the season to pray for peace, unity, and stability in Nigeria, while calling for tolerance and mutual respect among people of different faiths. Security agencies are also expected to heighten patrols and surveillance around prayer grounds, transport hubs, and other crowded areas to ensure a peaceful celebration throughout the country.
