Abia politics witnessed a realignment on Wednesday as former Senator representing Abia Central, Distinguished Senator Nkechi Justina Nwaogu, officially dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defection comes just days after the outcome of the APC senatorial primary election, where her longtime political rival, Hon. Emeka Atuma, emerged victorious.
Nwaogu, a former House of Representatives member and two-term senator popularly known in political circles as “Mama APC,” had reportedly remained deeply dissatisfied with both the outcome and conduct of the primary election.
Sources within the party revealed that disenchantment had been brewing quietly for days, especially after strong indications emerged that the former senator was holding secret talks with the NDC.
Political insiders disclosed that several APC chieftains made frantic efforts to pacify her and stop her exit from the party, but her latest political moves now appear to have sealed her decision to part ways with the ruling party.
Her expected declaration for the NDC is billed to take place at her Okpu Umuobo country home ahead of the Abia Central Senatorial Primary Election scheduled for May 29, 2026.
However, her defection may trigger legal and political controversies following concerns surrounding the Electoral Act and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s membership registration deadline.
According to reports, INEC had already closed the window for new party membership registrations after the submission of e-registration records on May 10, 2026, creating uncertainty around the legality of fresh defections and participation in new primaries.
Some members of the National Working Committee who spoke to journalists reportedly expressed fears that a recent court ruling creating room for defections could eventually be overturned by a higher court.
The sources warned that the legal opening currently being relied upon by new defectors may eventually become a dangerous “bobby trap” for the NDC if the ruling is later nullified.
Despite the looming legal uncertainty, political observers say Nwaogu’s defection could significantly alter the power dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections in Abia Central Senatorial District.
