Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has handed a call-up to Belgium-based Nigerian defender Christian Akpan ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
Akpan, who has been turning heads with his performances in the Belgian top flight, is drafted in as Chelle continues to refresh the squad and deepen competition for places in defence. The versatile defender will now have the chance to stake a claim for a regular spot as Nigeria test themselves against two strong European opponents.
The friendlies against Poland and Portugal are part of the Super Eagles’ build-up to future competitive fixtures, and Akpan’s invitation highlights Chelle’s intent to reward form and broaden the pool of players available for forthcoming tournaments.
