Martin O’Neill has agreed a new one-year contract to remain as Celtic manager, with the deal also including an option for a further 12 months that could keep him at the club until 2028.

Celtic’s majority shareholder Dermot Desmond is understood to have made O’Neill his clear priority for the role, despite considering former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane as an alternative candidate. The 74-year-old O’Neill indicated that he wished to continue in charge at Parkhead, giving the board the green light to finalise an extension rather than pursue a change in the dugout.

The decision brings continuity to Celtic’s planning ahead of the new season, with O’Neill now expected to lead the club’s transfer strategy, pre-season preparations and European qualification campaign. Keane, who had been under serious consideration, is now likely to look elsewhere for his next managerial opportunity as Celtic double down on experience and stability by keeping faith with O’Neill.
