A severe rainstorm has caused extensive damage to facilities at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, affecting two female hostels and displacing several students.
The storm, which struck the campus on Friday afternoon, reportedly damaged sections of the Awolowo and Isa Kaita female hostels, blowing off parts of their roofs and exposing students’ belongings to the elements.
Dean of Student Affairs, Christian Ezeibe, confirmed that all affected students have been relocated to alternative accommodation following directives from the Vice-Chancellor, Simon Ortuanya.
According to university authorities, more than 20 students whose bed spaces were impacted by the storm have already been provided with new accommodation within the campus.
The university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Egwu, said the rainstorm also uprooted trees and left fallen branches on several campus roads, temporarily disrupting movement.
While some students reported losses involving mattresses, clothing, books, and other personal belongings, no casualties or injuries were recorded.
University management has expressed sympathy to those affected and assured students and staff that steps are being taken to restore damaged facilities and ensure their safety and welfare.
