The Anambra State Government has intensified its crackdown on illegal structures and shanties in Nnewi, warning that there will be no extension of the deadline already issued for their removal.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, made the declaration during an ongoing sensitisation and enforcement exercise, urging affected property owners and business operators to comply with the government’s directives.
According to Ojukwu, the exercise forms part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s urban renewal programme aimed at improving environmental safety, reducing congestion, tackling flooding and promoting orderly development across the state.
He disclosed that government agencies will commence the removal of all identified illegal structures once the ultimatum expires, stressing that planning regulations will be enforced without compromise.
The commissioner also announced plans to launch “Operation Show Your Physical Planning Permit” to ensure compliance with approved building standards and curb unauthorized developments.
As part of the ongoing exercise, officials have continued marking non-compliant structures and issuing notices in strategic areas of Nnewi, including Nkwo Market, Akamili, Uruagu, the NAUTH Permanent Site axis and Eme Court Road.
Ojukwu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating cleaner, safer and more investment-friendly urban centres, insisting that the deadline for compliance remains unchanged.
