An Enugu-based journalist and former House of Representatives candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Anti-Kidnapping Unit are tracking him despite no known criminal allegation against him.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Ani claimed that security operatives had been making inquiries about his whereabouts and allegedly questioned some of his associates in an effort to locate him.
The journalist further alleged that police officers were deployed to monitor the following intelligence that he planned to travel to Abuja.
Ani maintained that he has committed no offence and described himself as a law-abiding citizen involved in journalism, security analysis, entrepreneurship, and public advocacy.
He stated that he attempted to contact the Anti-Kidnapping Unit Commander for clarification but received no official explanation regarding any investigation involving him.
While expressing concern over the alleged surveillance, Ani said he remains willing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies if formally invited. He also called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, human rights organisations, and civil society groups to investigate the matter and ensure due process is followed.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had not publicly responded to the allegations.
