The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly criticised Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, over his recent comments on Labour Party leader Peter Obi’s call for the release of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB accused Soludo of contradicting his previous position on Kanu’s detention, alleging that the governor had previously advocated for Kanu’s release but has now adopted a different stance.

The group recalled Soludo’s 2022 visit to Kanu at the DSS facility in Abuja, where he publicly called for his release and reportedly offered to stand as surety. IPOB also referenced comments made in 2025 by Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, who stated that the governor was working towards securing Kanu’s freedom as part of efforts to restore peace in the South-East.

IPOB’s reaction follows criticism by the Anambra State Government of Peter Obi’s recent demand for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release. The state government reportedly described Obi’s position as a challenge to the judicial process.

The pro-Biafra group described Soludo’s latest position as a departure from his earlier views and accused him of placing political interests above the collective aspirations of many people in the South-East.

IPOB further maintained that calls for Kanu’s release have received support from various individuals and groups across Nigeria, stressing that the issue extends beyond ethnic or regional considerations.

Nnamdi Kanu has remained in detention since June 2021 and is facing terrorism-related charges before the courts, which he has consistently denied. Legal proceedings surrounding his case remain ongoing.

The latest exchange highlights the continuing political and legal debates surrounding Kanu’s detention and its implications for peace, security, and political discourse in the South-East region.
