A high-level delegation from ACCIONA Group, in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has visited Awka, Anambra State, to evaluate potential development projects aimed at transforming the state capital.

The team was received at the Anambra State Lighthouse by the Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, who described the visit as a major step toward attracting international investment and urban renewal support for the state.

Dr. Nwankwo noted that Awka remains a fast-growing economic hub but warned that severe erosion, affecting about 30 to 35 percent of the state’s landmass, poses a major environmental challenge requiring urgent intervention.

Officials of the Anambra Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) said the AfDB-backed programme follows years of engagement and is designed to support cities in planning and funding strategic infrastructure projects.

Proposed interventions include mass housing, transport systems such as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), erosion control, urban water supply, waste management, power infrastructure, tourism development, and e-governance systems.

The visiting ACCIONA team said the mission is to engage stakeholders, review existing plans, and develop a roadmap for Awka’s sustainable growth, which will result in the creation of about 25 project proposals for implementation.

The initiative positions Awka as the first Nigerian city selected under the AfDB urban development programme, raising expectations of major infrastructure upgrades and long-term transformation.
