A Professor of Microbiology at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, Prof. Osita C. Ugbogu, has secured a prestigious National Research Fund (NRF) grant to carry out a research project aimed at improving food safety and commercial value of local food products in Nigeria.
The research project, titled “Valorization of Fermented Ugba (African Oil Bean Seed) for Enhanced Food Safety, Nutritional Value and Commercialization in Nigeria,” focuses on improving the safety, nutrition, and economic potential of a widely consumed traditional delicacy.
The Vice-Chancellor of ABSU, Prof. Ndukwe J. Okeudo, announced the development during the university’s 287th Senate meeting, describing the achievement as part of the institution’s growing research breakthroughs under his leadership.
He commended Prof. Ugbogu, who also serves as Dean of the Postgraduate School, for his scholarly contributions, noting that his work continues to enhance the university’s visibility and academic reputation.
The University Senate also applauded the professor, expressing confidence that the research will contribute significantly to innovation, national development, and improved food systems in Nigeria.
