The Abia State Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.

The directive, approved by Governor , will take effect from June 22, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen security, improve public safety, reduce traffic congestion, and promote a more organized transportation system across the state.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the government directed all commercial motorcycle operators to cease operations within the affected cities on or before the implementation date.

The state government disclosed that security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been mandated to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

It warned that any operator found violating the ban will face arrest, while the motorcycle involved will be confiscated in accordance with existing laws.

The government further appealed to residents, transport operators, and community leaders to cooperate with authorities to ensure the smooth implementation of the policy.

The move marks a significant shift in urban transportation management in Abia State and is expected to impact commercial transport activities in the affected metropolitan areas.
