The Nigeria Democratical pCongress (NDC) is grappling with internal tensions following the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, as party elders and stakeholders have reaffirmed their support for the party’s candidate, Bishop Oscar Ossai.

At the centre of the controversy are allegations by some pahrty supporters that certain aggrieved members failed to support the NDC during the June 20 by-election after disagreements over the party’s nomination process. The claims, which have not been independently verified, include accusations of anti-party activities and attempts to undermine the party’s candidate.

Supporters of Bishop Ossai maintain that the NDC performed creditably despite being added to the ballot shortly before the election, limiting its time for mobilisation and voter education. They also argue that the party’s growing support demonstrates its emergence as a viable political alternative in Enugu State.

Amid the controversy, the NDC Elders Forum and several leaders from the Nsukka Zone passed a vote of confidence in Bishop Oscar Ossai, praising his grassroots mobilisation, leadership, and commitment to strengthening the party.

The elders urged party members to remain united and focus on building a stronger political structure ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that internal unity and loyalty will be critical to the party’s future success.

Meanwhile, former lawmaker Patrick Asadu, who has been linked to some of the allegations by party supporters, has previously denied claims questioning his political record and maintained that he made significant contributions during his time in office.
