The Delta State Police Command has arrested eighty-five suspects over various criminal activities, and recovered thirty-two firearms within the last two months.

Addressing newsmen in Asaba during the Command’s second-quarter press briefing, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, said intelligence-led operations carried out between April 29 and June 29, 2026, led to the rescue of eighteen kidnap victims and the arrest of suspected kidnappers, cultists, murder suspects and drug dealers across the state.

He hinted that the arrest of a suspected kidnap kingpin at Ogor Market in Ughelli, led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and sixty-three rounds of live ammunition, with two other suspected kidnappers arrested after emerging from a forest to buy food and medication.

He stated further that another operation in the Ubulu-Okiti forest yielded the recovery of another AK-47 rifle and ammunition.

The Commissioner, Delta State Police Command stated further that operatives rescued a three-year-old child abducted by a commercial motorcyclist, and arrested the suspect and recovered part of the ransom paid by the child’s family.

CP Oyeniyi stated , “In another significant breakthrough, operatives of the Command Anti-Vice Squad (CAVS), at Ughelli, on 18th May 2026, successfully rescued a three-year-old child who had been abducted by a commercial motorcyclist entrusted with taking the child to and from school. Following a complaint from the child’s father, technical intelligence assets were deployed; operatives traced and arrested the suspect, one Kelvin Ogaga, ‘m’, who had demanded a ransom of Five Hundred Thousand Naira from the victim’s family. Upon his arrest, the sum of One Hundred and Twenty-Seven Thousand Naira, being part of the ransom money, was recovered. The child was rescued unharmed and reunited with the family”

On homicide investigations, the Command confirmed the arrest of a thirty-one-year-old suspect over the alleged murder of a final-year law student of the University of Port Harcourt in Warri.
According to CP Oyeniyi, the suspect in the murder of Bishop Chinedu Okonkwo has been charged to court following his arrest in Anambra State.

CP Oyeniyi said sustained operations against cult groups led to the arrest of suspected cultists in Ibusa, Agbarho and Oko, with the recovery of firearms, charms, illicit drugs and other dangerous weapons.

“The Command also intensified its crackdown on drug trafficking, arresting suspected dealers in Sapele and recovering large quantities of controlled substances, including Tramadol, Codeine, MDMA and cannabis’

“Overall, the Police recovered three AK-47 rifles, four pump-action guns, two Beretta pistols, several locally made firearms, one hundred and ninety-seven rounds of live AK-47 ammunition, two hundred and nineteen live cartridges, and a wide range of illicit drugs”, the police commissioner stated.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Delta State Police Command to sustaining intelligence-driven policing to make the state increasingly unsafe for criminals, while urging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
