Residents of Aguata Local Government Area turned out in large numbers on Saturday to participate in a community-wide environmental sanitation exercise led by the Mayor of Aguata LGA, Dr. Chibueze Ofobuike.
The exercise, which lasted from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., saw youths and residents from the 14 communities in the local government area engage in the clearing of bushes, desilting of drainage channels and evacuation of waste as part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
Leading the exercise, Dr. Ofobuike commended the enthusiasm and commitment displayed by the youths, describing them as responsible and development-oriented.
According to him, the cleanup exercise reflects the collective determination of Aguata residents to maintain a clean, healthy and flood-free environment.
He also applauded the leadership of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for prioritising environmental sustainability through the ongoing statewide sanitation campaign.
Dr. Ofobuike urged residents to sustain the culture of environmental cleanliness beyond the monthly sanitation exercise, stressing that keeping communities clean is a shared responsibility.
The exercise forms part of the Anambra State Government’s intensified efforts to address environmental degradation, prevent flooding and promote healthier communities across the state.
Residents who participated described the initiative as timely, pledging continued support for programmes aimed at protecting the environment and improving public health.
