The Anambra State Police Command has defended its ongoing enforcement operation against vehicles fitted with tinted windows, assuring residents that the exercise is aimed at enhancing security and combating crime rather than harassing law-abiding motorists.

The clarification follows growing concerns from members of the public over the impoundment of vehicles with tinted glass, including some reportedly owned by individuals with valid tinted glass permits.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the operation forms part of a comprehensive security strategy to strengthen public safety across the state.

According to the police, the enforcement exercise extends beyond tinted vehicles to include unregistered vehicles as well as those with concealed, covered, or defaced number plates, which security agencies say are often used by criminal elements to evade identification.

The Command stated that the exercise is designed to verify the authenticity of tinted glass permits, detect forged or fraudulently obtained permits, enforce compliance with vehicle registration laws, and prevent criminals from exploiting such vehicles to perpetrate crimes.

Police authorities noted that intelligence reports and prevailing security challenges necessitated the operation, as some criminal suspects have allegedly used tinted vehicles and obscured number plates to conceal their identities and frustrate law enforcement efforts.

While acknowledging the inconvenience the exercise may cause to genuine motorists, the Police Command appealed for patience and cooperation from residents.

The Command assured the public that the operation is being carried out in the interest of protecting lives and property and is not intended to victimise lawful vehicle owners.

It further reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all enforcement activities are conducted professionally and in accordance with the law while strengthening security across Anambra State.
