The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Mrs. Nwoko Gift, for allegedly attempting to kill her 12-year-old house help, Miss Ebony Chimamanda, in Umuahia.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, the incident occurred on July 5, 2026, and came to light after a viral social media video showed the suspect attacking the minor with a knife.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly attacked the victim over her failure to carry out a household chore before she left for the market. Police also uncovered reports of repeated physical abuse and threats against the child.
Operatives of the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly rescued the victim, arrested the suspect, and recovered the knife used in the attack.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, while the suspect is expected to be charged with attempted murder upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Police Command condemned the incident and urged residents to promptly report all forms of domestic violence and child abuse to law enforcement authorities.
