The United States could have used a missile. Instead, it deployed a Saronic Corsair unmanned surface vessel in what is reported to be the naval drone’s first operational strike.
The attack marked a significant combat test for the unmanned surface vessel and reportedly exposed weaknesses in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps defences.
The use of the Corsair could also signal that the US military is applying lessons from Ukraine’s battlefield deployment of naval drones, which have demonstrated how relatively low cost unmanned vessels can be used to challenge conventional forces and strike high value targets.
The operation may represent a broader shift towards the use of unmanned systems in US military operations, particularly in environments where deploying crewed vessels or more expensive weapons could carry greater risks.
If the strike proves operationally successful, further US attacks involving unmanned surface vessels could follow.
