Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a ₦41 million support package for 41 Edo indigenes who recently returned to Nigeria after fleeing xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
Speaking while receiving the returnees at the Festival Hall of the Government House in Benin City, the governor announced that each beneficiary would receive ₦1 million within 24 hours to enable them secure accommodation and begin rebuilding their lives after reportedly losing their homes, businesses and other valuables during the attacks.
Governor Okpebholo also pledged to provide soft loans to interested beneficiaries to support business development and facilitate their successful reintegration into society.
He urged the returnees to see their homecoming as an opportunity for a fresh start, assuring them of the state government’s continued support and commitment to their welfare.

The governor noted Nigeria’s historic role in supporting South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle and stressed that, despite the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians, the country should continue to promote peaceful relations rather than retaliation.
Responding on behalf of the returnees, Mr. Riches Unubun expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the Edo State Government for facilitating their evacuation and providing support.
He also encouraged the returnees to remain law-abiding and contribute meaningfully to the development of Edo State.
