MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has urged residents of Enugu State and electricity consumers within its franchise area to observe electrical safety precautions as heavy rainfall, windstorms and flooding intensify across the state.
The company’s Head of Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, gave the advice while speaking with journalists in Enugu, warning that the rainy season increases the risk of electrocution, electrical accidents and damage to property.
Mr. Ezeh advised residents to remain indoors or seek safe shelter during rainfall, cautioning against taking cover under trees or staying close to electricity poles, power lines and other electrical installations.
He explained that heavy rains and strong winds could bring down trees and electricity poles, leaving live wires exposed and posing serious danger to lives and property.
The company also warned customers against handling electrical appliances, switches and sockets with wet hands, urging households and business owners to ensure all electrical installations are properly insulated and regularly maintained.
Parents and guardians were equally advised to keep children away from electrical facilities and other potential hazards during the rainy season.
Mr. Ezeh further recommended unplugging sensitive electrical appliances during thunderstorms to prevent damage from lightning-induced power surges.
He urged members of the public to promptly report fallen electricity poles, snapped power lines, damaged transformers and other hazardous electrical installations through the company’s emergency response channels.
Reaffirming Main Power’s commitment to public safety and reliable electricity supply, Mr. Ezeh called on customers to support the company’s safety campaign by adhering to electrical safety guidelines and promptly reporting dangerous situations as the rainy season continues.
