The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, has warned principals of public secondary schools to uphold discipline and examination standards or risk removal from office.

The warning came during an unscheduled monitoring exercise at Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, and Community Secondary School, Okpuno, where the commissioner assessed compliance with guidelines for the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.

Dr. Ogugua said the state government remains committed to eliminating examination malpractice and ensuring that public schools uphold the integrity of external examinations.

At Igwebuike Grammar School, the commissioner expressed dissatisfaction with the level of disorder, noting that several students were seen loitering around the school premises during examination hours. He also condemned the poor condition of the examination hall, describing it as untidy and unfit for a conducive learning environment.

He urged the school management to strengthen supervision and maintain a clean, disciplined atmosphere that promotes academic excellence. Addressing the students, he encouraged them to cultivate good sanitation habits, stressing that cleanliness reflects discipline and respect for learning.

At Community Secondary School, Okpuno, Dr. Ogugua observed that the NECO examination had yet to commence at the scheduled time due to the late arrival of external supervisors. The school’s Principal, Mrs. Osigwe, explained that the students seen outside the premises were Junior Secondary School candidates who had completed their first paper and were awaiting the next examination.

The commissioner said the monitoring exercise is part of the Soludo administration’s efforts to restore confidence in the education sector, warning that principals who fail to enforce discipline and uphold examination standards will face appropriate sanctions.
