Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦2 billion to the Abia State Government to support the revival and expansion of the Akwete fabric industry, a renowned handwoven textile indigenous to Akwete community in Ukwa East Local Government Area.
The First Lady announced the donation during her visit to Aba, where she celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Akwete weaving and reaffirmed her commitment to preserving Nigeria’s indigenous crafts.
She said the intervention is aimed at developing the Akwete production centre, creating employment opportunities, empowering local women and boosting the state’s economy.
Mrs. Tinubu described Akwete fabric as a symbol of Nigeria’s cultural identity, noting that the traditional craft, passed down through generations, deserves national and global recognition.
She urged younger generations to embrace and preserve the nation’s cultural heritage by promoting indigenous fabrics and traditional attire.
The First Lady also called on prominent sons and daughters of the South-East to support efforts to preserve the Akwete weaving tradition, declaring that it is time for the fabric to gain wider national prominence.
Responding, Governor Alex Otti and the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, expressed appreciation for the donation, describing it as a major boost to the preservation and commercial development of the Akwete fabric industry.
Governor Otti also reiterated his support for the Federal Government’s economic reforms, expressing optimism that the policies would deliver long-term economic growth.
As part of the visit, the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers conferred the chieftaincy title of “Ugo Nwanyi Abia” (Pride of Abia Women) on First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in recognition of her contributions to women empowerment and national development.
