The Chairman of the Enugu State Football Association, Mr. Tony Ugwu, has described Spain’s victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final as a reflection of the team’s resilience, discipline and tactical coordination.
Speaking in an interview in Nsukka, Ugwu said both finalists displayed exceptional football, but Spain’s determination and organisation ultimately earned them the coveted World Cup title after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time.
He noted that the thrilling encounter sparked celebrations among Spanish supporters both at the New York/New Jersey Stadium and across Spain.
Commenting on Africa’s performance at the tournament, the Enugu FA Chairman commended the participating African nations, particularly Morocco, for reaching the quarter-finals and representing the continent creditably.
Ugwu, however, expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the tournament, describing the Super Eagles’ absence as a major setback for the country’s football.
He called on the Federal Government, the Nigeria Football Federation and other stakeholders to begin early preparations and provide the necessary support to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the next FIFA World Cup and compete strongly for the title.
