Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has disclosed that South-East governors and some neighbouring South-South states are collaborating on plans to develop a regional railway network aimed at boosting transportation, trade and economic integration across the region.
Speaking during the July edition of his monthly media chat in Umuahia, Governor Otti said the proposed rail project would link major commercial centres, including Port Harcourt, Aba, Enugu, parts of Imo State and Akwa Ibom.
He explained that the Abia State Government had initially planned to develop a light rail system within the state and had engaged a Chinese firm to design the project. However, the plan was suspended after the government concluded that a regional rail network would provide greater economic benefits.
According to the governor, integrating neighbouring states into the project would enhance connectivity, stimulate commerce and create a more sustainable transportation system.
Otti noted that the existing Port Harcourt–Maiduguri railway corridor, which passes through Aba, offers an opportunity to connect the proposed regional network with the Federal Government’s rail infrastructure, making the project more efficient and cost-effective.
On the 2027 general elections, the governor distanced himself from claims that South-East governors had endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, stressing that no governor has the authority to speak on behalf of others.
He maintained that every eligible Nigerian, including President Tinubu, has the constitutional right to seek elective office, adding that the electorate would ultimately decide the outcome through the ballot box.
Governor Otti also announced that the state government has acquired 20 additional electric buses to strengthen public transportation, noting that the vehicles would soon be deployed across the state.
He further disclosed plans to develop new housing estates in Umuahia and Aba, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to investing in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, security, science and technology, innovation, arts and culture to drive sustainable development in Abia State.
