A Kano High Court has handed down a death sentence to 19-year-old Saudat Jibrin for the brutal murder of her 30-year-old husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after they tied the knot!
Presiding over the case on Thursday, July 30, 2026, Justice Maryam Sabo ruled that the prosecution successfully proved the charge of culpable homicide against the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to the Prosecution Counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the grim incident went down on May 5, 2025, at Farawa Quarters in Kano.
The court heard that around 9:00 p.m., Saudat laced her husband’s local “Zobo” drink and subsequently slashed his throat with a knife—shockingly, only nine days into their new life together.
The prosecution presented watertight evidence and witnesses to nail the case under Section 221(a) of the Penal Code.
While the convict denied the charges, her defense counsel, Mr. Abdulfatah Muhammad, pleaded passionately for mercy. He told the court that Saudat had transformed while in custody—even memorizing the Holy Qur’an—and urged the judge to show leniency as she is the eldest child carrying the burden of her family’s survival.
However, the law took its course. Delivering the final verdict, Justice Sabo ruled:
”I hereby sentence Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging for culpable homicide. You have 90 days to appeal.”
