Residents of Njagachang Community in Cross River State were seen scooping spilled palm oil after a tanker transporting the product reportedly overturned, spilling its contents onto the road and into a nearby river.
The incident attracted large crowds as many residents rushed to the scene with buckets, containers and other vessels to collect the palm oil, despite potential safety risks.
Although no casualties were immediately reported, the incident has raised concerns over public safety, as well as the environmental impact of the spill on the nearby water body.
Road safety and environmental experts have consistently warned members of the public against rushing to scenes of tanker accidents, noting that such incidents can pose serious risks, including fire outbreaks, secondary crashes and environmental pollution.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the accident or the extent of the environmental damage as of the time of filing this report.
