As political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election gather momentum, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State is widely regarded as a strong contender for a second term, driven by his administration’s extensive infrastructure and development projects across the state.
Since assuming office in May 2023, Mbah’s administration has embarked on major road construction, the Smart Green Schools initiative, expansion of primary healthcare centres, improved security, water projects and economic reforms, earning commendation from traditional rulers, political leaders and business groups across the state’s three senatorial districts.
Political observers, however, note that while the governor’s performance has strengthened his position, electoral success will also depend on how residents assess the impact of these projects on their daily lives amid prevailing economic challenges.
Analysts say issues such as the rising cost of living, taxation, water supply and internal political dynamics may influence voters’ decisions despite the administration’s visible infrastructural achievements.
Governor Mbah’s recent alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is also expected to feature prominently in the political discourse ahead of the election. Supporters believe the move will strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government and attract greater development to the state, while critics argue it may test the loyalty of voters in a state traditionally dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Water supply remains another area under public scrutiny. While the government maintains that significant investments have been made to rehabilitate water infrastructure, some residents continue to express concerns over access to potable water.
Similarly, the Smart Green Schools project has attracted national attention, with stakeholders awaiting its full implementation across the state’s 260 wards.
Within the political landscape, analysts also point to growing interest in the 2027 governorship race from some political figures within Enugu East Senatorial District, although Governor Mbah continues to enjoy support from several stakeholders who have endorsed his administration’s developmental strides.
Political observers believe that while Governor Mbah currently enters the race with the advantages of incumbency and a visible record of infrastructure development, the opposition’s ability to unite and focus on issues affecting the welfare of residents could shape the competitiveness of the 2027 governorship election.
The election is expected to revolve around both the administration’s development record and the perceived impact of its policies on the lives of the people of Enugu State.
