The Ebonyi State Government has approved the absorption of 353 ad-hoc Community Health Extension Workers and skilled birth attendants into the state civil service, in a move aimed at strengthening primary healthcare delivery across the state.
The development was announced by the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Civil Service Commission, Virginia Okemini Oketa, while addressing the beneficiaries.
The health workers, who were previously engaged under the IMPACT Project, had been deployed to public health facilities across the state.
The government said the decision would help strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce and ensure improved service delivery at the grassroots.
In a related development, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has approved a monthly stipend of ₦30,000 for every National Youth Service Corps member deployed to the state.
The announcement was made during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Afikpo.
Representing the governor, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Chidiebere Onyia, assured the corps members of the state government’s commitment to their security, welfare and overall development throughout their service year.
Onyia described Ebonyi as a peaceful and hospitable state with opportunities for personal and professional development, urging the corps members to contribute meaningfully to their host communities.
He also encouraged them to embrace the values of patriotism, discipline, integrity and selfless service.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Malgwi Pat Maidariya, commended the state government for its partnership with the scheme but appealed for intervention to address infrastructure needs at the orientation camp.
The requests include the modernisation of the central camp kitchen, construction of a standard dining facility, establishment of a fully equipped Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Centre, renovation of the perimeter fence and upgrades to the multi-purpose hall.
The swearing-in ceremony featured the administration of the Oath of Allegiance to the corps members, Man ‘O’ War drills, traditional performances and an inspection of infrastructure projects within the camp.
The latest measures by the Ebonyi State Government are expected to boost healthcare delivery while strengthening support for young Nigerians undertaking the mandatory national service in the state.
