A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ebonyi State, Emmanuel Nwobo, has alleged that some aides and associates of Governor Francis Nwifuru are behind attacks and other alleged acts of intimidation against opposition members in the state.
Nwobo made the allegation on Tuesday while speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he expressed concern over what he described as increasing political tension in the state.
According to him, the governor ought to be aware of alleged attacks being carried out by individuals working under his administration, particularly against members of opposition parties.
Nwobo alleged that more than 200 people recently attacked the residence of a lawyer, describing the incident as part of a broader pattern of intimidation against opposition voices.
“I don’t want to believe the governor is not aware of what is happening,” Nwobo said, alleging that some individuals had openly declared on social media that opposition parties would not be allowed to operate freely in the state.
He further claimed that petitions had been submitted to relevant security agencies following some of the alleged attacks, but expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as the response of the authorities.
“I don’t want to sound accusatory at this point, most of the atrocities are committed by people that work under the governor and they applaud it on social media,” he said.
The PDP chieftain called for greater attention from security agencies and relevant authorities to allegations of political violence and intimidation in the state.
The allegations could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.
The Ebonyi State Government and Governor Francis Nwifuru were not immediately available for a response to the claims.
