The Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government of Akwa Ibom State, Engr. Emmanuel Inyang, has renewed his administration’s commitment to strengthening maternal and child healthcare delivery and improving the wellbeing of women and children across the Local Government Area.
The Chairman made the commitment on Monday during the commemoration of the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week at the Primary Health Centre, Mkpat Enin, organised by the Ibom Open Maternity (IOM) Project in partnership with Mkpat Enin Local Government Council.
The event, which had the theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” focused on sensitising pregnant women and nursing mothers on the importance of breastfeeding, proper nutrition and maternal healthcare.
Engr. Inyang commended the Ibom Open Maternity Project for its commitment to improving maternal and child health in the State, noting that the initiative aligns with his administration’s healthcare priorities.
He assured of the Council’s continued support for programmes that promote maternal and child health, while encouraging pregnant women and nursing mothers to take advantage of available healthcare services.
Also speaking, wife of the Council Chairman, Mrs. Edidiong Emmanuel Inyang, stressed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, proper nutrition and regular antenatal care, urging mothers to prioritise their health and that of their children.
She also appreciated the State and Local Governments, health workers and other partners for their support, noting that promoting healthy mothers and children remains a collective responsibility.
Representing the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Ms. Ofonime Godwin, commended the Chairman and his wife for their commitment to maternal and child healthcare and advised nursing mothers to breastfeed their babies exclusively from birth to six months, stressing the nutritional and developmental benefits of breast milk.
She also urged pregnant women to be mindful of their diet and attend antenatal clinics regularly for proper monitoring and professional care.
Speaking on behalf of CareLife Foundation, Nurse Enobong Umanah encouraged mothers to breastfeed their babies, noting that breast milk contributes significantly to the healthy growth and development of children.
The highlight of the event was the safe delivery of a baby by a woman who had come to the health centre for the programme, adding a memorable moment to the breastfeeding week celebration.
