The Youth Ladies Wing of the Anambra State Town Union Council, ASTUC, has honoured 21 outstanding women, representing the 21 local government areas of the state, for their contributions to community development and girl-child empowerment.

The women were recognised at a ceremony held at the ASTUC Hall, Old Government House, Awka, where dignitaries, community leaders and other stakeholders gathered to celebrate their achievements.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, described Anambra women as important drivers of social and community development.

Ibezim commended the organisers for recognising women whose contributions, he said, continue to impact communities and inspire younger generations.

He urged the honourees to remain committed to their various causes and continue serving as positive role models for young people, particularly girls.

The ASTUC Youths President General, Comrade Ken Okoli, said the recognition was introduced to celebrate women who have distinguished themselves through their commitment to girl-child development and the preservation of the values of Anambra communities.

According to him, the initiative also seeks to encourage more women to take active roles in community development and leadership.

The Coordinator of the ASTUC Youth Ladies Wing, Lady Anthonia Onumah, said the programme was designed to inspire young girls by highlighting women who have overcome challenges and made meaningful contributions to society.

She said the honourees represented examples of resilience, service and leadership that young girls could emulate.

Some of the award recipients expressed appreciation for the recognition, describing it as an encouragement to intensify their efforts towards community development and the empowerment of the girl child.

The event also featured goodwill messages from government officials and other dignitaries, with participants calling for continued support for initiatives that recognise women’s contributions to society.
