The Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Anambra State Chapter, Barr. Amara Muojeke, has urged Nigerians to break the culture of silence surrounding domestic violence and abuse against women and children.
Muojeke made the call while speaking at the Special Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), ABS Chapel, in Awka, where she challenged members of the public to take action whenever they witness abuse.
She asked Nigerians to consider how they would react if a victim of domestic violence were their own child.
“What if your own child faces the same situation?” she asked.
The FIDA chairperson condemned the marginalisation and mistreatment of women, widows and female children, particularly in matters relating to protection, care and inheritance.
She stressed that safeguarding vulnerable members of society should not be left to government alone, urging communities and individuals to report cases of abuse instead of looking away.
Muojeke disclosed that the Anambra State Government has established an SGBV and Inheritance Unit under the Ministry of Justice, providing a channel through which victims and witnesses can report cases.
According to her, the unit can collaborate with the Police Gender Desk, Ministry of Women Affairs and other relevant agencies to protect victims and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
She also raised concern over the maltreatment of children employed as domestic workers, reminding adults that they have a responsibility to protect children from abuse, exploitation and other forms of violence.
Muojeke called for increased public awareness of laws protecting women and children, stressing that ignorance should not be used as an excuse for violating their rights.
She further urged residents to become more proactive in reporting cases of domestic abuse and other human rights violations.
“If I have security and you don’t have security, there is no security,” she said.
Muojeke maintained that protecting vulnerable individuals ultimately strengthens the safety and wellbeing of the entire community.
